USA Cheer has given safety rules. A safe program has direct adult supervision, correct conditioning, skills training, and warm-up exercises. Coaches should be trained in risk management, as well as basic first aid and CPR/AED training. Concussion protocols should always be followed. Athletes, coaches, and parents should be trained in athlete protection. This includes understanding, preventing, recognizing, and reporting abuse such as bullying, hazing, physical and emotional misconduct, and sexual abuse.

Title 8 CCR 3400: Medical Services and First Aid-pertains to the “general industry” and is the minimum standard by which your employer will need to abide. This regulation is to ensure that employers in California have adequate first aid materials readily available, as approved by a consulting physician. At a minimum, each employer’s first aid kit should contain the supplies listed in Table A.

The onset of heat illness may be confused with other problems and may not always be obvious before it becomes life-threatening. California’s playground safety regulations were enacted January 1, 2000 which requires all public playgrounds to be inspected by a Certified Playground Safety Inspector. When we are notified a school site has a new playground, SISC strongly recommends an inspection before it is used and before the district makes final payment to the vendor. SISC can conduct this inspection for our members, please contact the JPA for scheduling.

Member Alert – AB 949 : Criminal Background Checks Sole Proprietors

AB 949 approved by the Governor on July 21, 2017, and effective on January 1, 2018, now requires an individual operating as a sole proprietor of an entity, to meet the same criminal background check requirements. As specified in Education Code section 45125.1 the following services, where individuals may have any contact with pupils, require criminal background checks as specified by the code.

The Eric Paredes Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act, AB 1639, enacts several requirements for all K-12 California School Districts with students participating in athletic activities. Among the requirements, school districts are encouraged to post on their Internet web sites information and material regarding Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Member Alert – Responding to Requests for Agenda Materials by Email

The Brown Act has long required districts to permit “standing requests” for meeting agendas or agenda packets to be mailed to the requester at the earlier of agenda posting or distribution of the materials to a board majority (Brown Act, Government Code section 54954.1). Boards could establish a fee for mailing the agenda materials. The requests were valid for a calendar year, to be renewed each January 1. Requesters are no longer required to wait for the mailman, and can request response by email.
